"For those who have heard something and are wondering, Berlyn was in an accident yesterday and has a severe brain injury in critical condition in the ICU. We will be at the hospital for a while...Please pray that she comes out ok and we get to see our spunky cute Berlyn back very soon. Please pray with us, this sweet, stubborn girl was meant to do good on this earth, we need all your prayers!!!"

November 24th:
"UPDATE: Berlyn is stable right now but is still in a lot of pain. We won't get another CT scan until Sunday to see if there is any progress in swelling or bleeding in the brain. Just keeping her comfortable as best we can so her body can heal quickly, we will try to update everyone as much as we can. We really appreciate all of the prayers and support on our behalf. Thank you so much!!!!"

November 24th:
"Woke up because Berlyn was stirring in bed and she smiled at us and talked to us and started pointing for things and grabbing for her elephant with right hang, left still doesn't move. Gave mom and dad more hope and faith, just what we needed. She is letting us know she is fighting!"

November 24th:
"Thank you everyone for your sweet thoughts and prayers, we have felt them already. Please continue to pray for our precious baby. We will update you as we know and see more. Thank you so much, there is no way I could tag all of you and thank you so I hope you see this!"

November 25th:
"UPDATE on Berlyn: she is getting better everyday. her swelling has gone down a ton and is starting to look more like my little baby again. She started eating and drinking milk so she was FINALLY able to come off the IV fluids. the CT scan this morning showed new blood but they are just going to continue to watch it and no surgery. she will get another CT scan in a few days. she still cant move the left side of her body or hold her head up. she started working with a physical therapist. they may move us out of the ICU soon and to another floor since she has been stable. so many things going on but slowly making improvements. Thank you again for all your prayers! Please continue to pray with us!"

November 26th:
"Berlyn moved her arm and leg a little more today, not much but it did improve. She held her head up today but still a little wobbly. still not sitting up or anything. she will probably be moved out of the ICU tomorrow, but still not sure when we will be home. She was very irritable today but probably because she didnt get much sleep all day :( praying for a better day tomorrow! Thanks again to everyone who has said prayers for our family, we really appreciate it!!!!!"

November 27th:
"This little girl started out with a cranky day but that completely changed by this afternoon. We were moved out of the ICU today and I think Berlyn knew that because she became the happiest girl after that. She has been playful and talkative and she ate a full dinner finally! Again moving her left arm and leg a little more today. Still don't know when we will go home because of the fracture and brain trauma and dr wants to see more movement on the left side before she leaves. Improvement!! I can breathe a little! Thanks for the prayers keep em coming!!!! The Lord is listening!"
"This experience has made me realize/remember how amazing and supportive our family and friends are, how precious our little baby is, and what great peace and comfort the Atonement can bring! Counting our blessings through this trial! Thank you all sooooo much!!"

November 29th:
"Been at the hospital one week now and still no one can say anything about a discharge :( sleepless nights. So sad today Berlyn was wining and I look at her she is grabbing her left arm with her right arm and trying to give it to me...she knows it doesn't work right :( but on a brighter note she can hold her weight a little better when she stands with assistance and she can almost sit up and she rolls around and wanted to get down and walk this morning thinking she could....all good signs!!!!! Long ways to go but she's come a long way already!

November 29th:
"Finally let us go outside for a walk!! Berlyn loved it!"
November 29th:
"So Berlyn is at Cardons til Monday then getting transported to Phoenix Children's for inpatient physical therapy for a week or two. Can I just say I am so sick of hospitals and I just want to be home with a healthy family for the holidays? Count your blessings! So glad she is still with us!"

December 1st:
"Yes this little girl is doing so much better! Her leg is getting so much strength she can now stand up on her own and take a few wobbly steps. Her left arm is a little slower but still making small improvements. We are still planning on going to Phoenix Children's on Monday for rehab. Thank you for the continued prayers!"

December 4th:
"Well....WE ARE HOME!!!!! the medical director from our insurance company looked over Berlyn's case and decided she didn't need intense inpatient physical therapy at Phoenix Children's hospital, so they discharged us today!!! Now we just have check ups with the neuro surgeon every few weeks for at least 6 months til her fracture is healed and she has outpatient physical therapy 3 times a week for as long as she needs it. Still praying she gets full use out of her left side and the fracture heals correctly on its own so she doesn't need surgery!!! So glad to be home though and in our own beds! Thank you everyone for your continuous prayers!"
Immediately after the accident she was paralyzed on her left side, which is why she could not hold her head up. Her head began to really swell. Even though this was the case, her vitals were stable. They had ruled out a neck or back injury (thank heavens!) and took the neck brace off. Little by little, day by day she started to try to talk more and more, still gibberish and slurring her words though. They then started her on occupational and physical therapy. We were given exercises to do with her arms and legs and head to see if we could get her strength back.

After 5 days in the PICU and her vitals staying stable, they moved us to another floor, which meant it wasn't life threatening. We were again RELIEVED! The doctors wanted to see more movement in her left arm and leg before they would discharge us. Every few days she would get another CT scan to see the improvement (if any) of her skull and brain. After a few days the bleeding in the brain had stopped and the swelling started to go down. Everyday she looked a little bit more like our Berlyn because the swelling was going down slowly. She started talking more and more and getting her personality back. She kept working with physical therapists and occupational therapists and speech therapists. She kept getting stronger and stronger. By day 9, a Friday, she was almost walking again, but we weren't being discharged until they knew if they were gonna transfer us to Phoenix Children's Rehab Center. On that Monday we were told that our insurance had denied the transfer because she was already walking again (in a week mind you) and that they were confident that out patient physical therapy would be enough. We weren't sure how we felt about this, but we couldn't really do anything about it. At least we were going HOME!

During our stay at the hospital we had MANY MANY MANY MANY people come to visit Berlyn to which we are very grateful. We felt so loved and blessed that so many people cared. We felt all of the prayers on our behalf and I know that is one of the main reasons we were able to keep it together.
It started out as a GREAT day. Bear, Sabrina and I ran the Turkey Trot at Red Mountain Park. My parents came to watch Berlyn while we ran. It felt so good and was a blast. (Enter picture here)

After the Turkey Trot, we went home and put Berlyn down for a nap while we cooked. I made mashed potatoes and a pie to take to Nani's house for dinner. It turned out pretty good. We ate a very yummy dinner at Nani's and hung out for awhile with family afterwards. Around 4pm we decided we would go see everyone over at Bear's grandparents house in Queen Creek.

Once there, Bear took Berlyn out in the backyard to play and run around, while I stayed inside and talked with his aunts. Not too long after did I see Bear's uncle Mike go outside. About 5 minutes later he sticks his head through the back door and motions for me to come outside. I go in the back and immediately hear Berlyn crying. I turn around the corner and see her motionless in Bear's arms. He turns her towards me and what I see makes me burst into tears. I immediately knew something was wrong. Her head was tilted to the side and she could not pick it up and her eyes were rolled over to the left side and she just kept whining and wanting to fall asleep. I had no idea what had happened, but I knew we needed to get her to the emergency room ASAP! As we were trying to leave, Bear's grandma Martha and aunt kept telling us she would be okay and kids hit their heads all the time. As much as I knew this was true, I knew something more was wrong. Bear's mom's cousin was there and he and grandpa Wayne went into a back room and gave her a blessing real quick. Martha told me that in his patriarchal blessing, he was given the power to heal. (I am getting goose bumps writing this).

As we were racing out the door, in the car. I called my parents. She told us to go straight to the Cardon Children's Hospital all the way in Downtown Mesa (from Queen Creek). We asked them to meet us there. On our way there in the car I held Berlyn as carefully as I could and tried to get her to keep crying and not fall asleep. This is also when Bear told what actually happened to her: Berlyn was just playing in the grass. Bear's uncle was playing catch with a little boy, nothing rough at all, just throwing the ball back and forth. The little boy threw the ball haywire and Bear's uncle started to run backwards and to the side to catch it. At that exact time, Berlyn darted out. Neither of them saw the other one. And Bear's uncle tripped over Berlyn and his entire body weight landed on her head. It was a freak accident. No body's fault.

After what seemed like an eternity, we make it to the hospital and rush her into the emergency room. We told them what happened and they immediately take us back into a room. We have nurses and doctors rushing to our side. They quickly put her in a neck brace and take x-rays and CT scans. She is still limp and trying to fall asleep. My parents finally arrive and the doctors come back and tell us that she has a traumatic brain injury and skull fracture and will need to be rushed to surgery. My dad and Bear give her another blessing. After quite a few minutes the ER doctor comes back in the room and says that the pediatric neuro surgeon on call said to wait on surgery. We are relieved!! He said that the brain was "angry" and that if he tried to operate right now that it would upset the brain even more and may cause more damage. (We are very thankful for his knowledge). He told us they would take her to the Pediatric ICU and wait for the swelling to go down and take it from there. Around midnight they finally get us to a room in the ICU. At this time they say they want to do a full body MRI to rule out back and neck injuries and they must sedate her for this to keep her completely still. I cannot stand for her to do these tests alone and insist I go with her. To my surprise they let me. I stay in that VERY loud, cold MRI room with her for the entire 2 hours it took. When we finally get back to the room it is around 2:30am. My parents decided to leave at this time, but would be back in the morning. Needless to say it was a very LONG hard night full of crying and anguish and guilt and pain.

She looked so cute in her yellow dress. We went to Mimi's again for dinner and trick or treating. We were so excited to take her out because she could actually walk this year. She loved being pretty and kept spinning around in her dress, which made it hard to take her picture. Bear dressed up as a mad scientist and I was, well, me. Didn't feel like dressing up this year.
We were so excited to have a place of our own. No more living on top of all my Grandma's stuff. It is a cute 3 bedroom 2 bath home with a pretty big backyard. We have a shed off the side of the carport and a huge garage in our backyard to make Bear's gym. It is awesome. So much storage space, which we need. Before we moved in, the backyard was all weeds and gross. We pulled all the weeds, chopped down a tree, put in curbing and planted grass. It is going to be a fun place for our kids to play.
Here is a picture of Berlyn trying to copy Daddy. He was putting up wall decorations and Berlyn decided she was going to as well. Before this picture she had picture up a kid flute thing and tried hammering the wall.

We had a little celebration for Berlyn's first birthday. My parents and Talor and Sabrina came over along with our best friends Cam and Ashley. Mallory stopped by later in the evening with her nieces and nephew. We ordered pizza for everyone and watched her open gifts. She was not really into opening her presents.

Our friend Ashley made her birthday cake. It was adorable! It was purple and pink with a little crown on top. So cute. She touched it once and started crying. She hates getting dirty and did not like the frosting and cake on her hands. She didn't eat much of it either.

Overall it was fun little celebration. She is a doll! OH! and she started officially walking earlier in the day ON her birthday. Easy to remember. So cute!
We had YUMMY soup and bread bowls, hot chocolate, and homemade cinnamon rolls. Each family exchanged gifts. We got a beautiful picture of Christ, a nerf gun, and bracelets for Berlyn and I. My grandma gave us an ornament of the Quetzal bird from Guatemala. (She gets all the grandkids a new ornament every year for Christmas so by they time they are my age and married they will have a tree full). She also gave Bear a Guatemalan tie and sling-shot. She gave Berlyn two Guatemalan dolls and I got a Guatemalan purse and necklace. Then we skyped my grandparents so they could watch our program. Each family sang a Christmas song. Our family sang "Feliz Navidad" with Bear playing the guitar. I love my family. As my Grandma said last night, "There is no greater joy than family." Merry Christmas!
We made it ALL from scratch. It took about 2 hours to get the measurements right for the model before we started baking. The gingerbread alone took about 5 hours to get everything made...then it took about another 17 hours (all from about 9:30pm to 1am) to get everything put together and decorated. PHEW! That was a lot of work, but it paid off. We think it looks pretty darn good. It is a gingerbread model of Bear's parent's house in Utah.

This will be one of our family traditions with our kids. Of course this will probably be the best looking one until all our kids are older, but still it will be a fun bonding time for all of us. I can't wait!
Wow that felt like it went fast. Here is an update.

As you probably already knew, Berlyn had her first laugh (see previous post for video).

She rolled over a few more times.

She can hold her head up while on her stomach.

She does little push-ups with her arms while on her stomach.

She now weighs over 12 pounds (not sure by how much, we go to the doctor again at the beginning of January)

She is talking (cooing), squealing, and gurgling at us ALL the time.

She loves her mommy and now recognizes my face and daddy's face.

She sleeps in her own crib and in her own room now.

The longest she has slept without eating is 11 hours (does not do this all the time though).

She has found her hands. She loves playing with them.

She can now grab objects you put in front of her hands, but will not reach for them yet.

She has been able to hold her head up since about 1.5 months.

She is still eating every 2-3 hours (probably because we are nursing).

Her hair is still growing and growing. No bald spot yet. It is starting to come in lighter...blonde in the front. We can do twists and put her hair in a ponytail.

Look at our chunky monkey! We love her!
After dinner we were all sitting around the dining room table and Uncle Talor just starts doing his Donald Duck noises and all of a sudden she starts cracking up and couldn't stop. Bear hurried and got it on video. It was so funny we were all dying laughing. Towards the end it started to scare her, she didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She was pretty tired. She crashed right afterwards. AH we love her!
This year we were with Bear's family. They all came down from Utah. Bear's siblings met Berlyn for the first time. They decided to start driving tuesday night and got to our house early Wednesday morning. CRAZY! They were all exhausted and pretty much passed out on the floor as soon as they got here. Bear's siblings were so excited to meet Berlyn. Only Bear's parents had seen her before when they came down for Berlyn's baby blessing at the beginning of October. So it had already been over a month since his parents saw her last. And man is she a lot bigger now. I think she weighed almost 9 pounds for her blessing, and now she is probably almost 13 pounds...maybe more. She is a chunk, but a cute one. They just kept passing her around and could not get enough of her...I don't blame them.
Well that Wednesday night we went to Bear's sister Brittany's engagement party at Aunt Marci's house. Brittany is marrying Rodolfo from Argentina. They are cute together.

Thursday, Thanksgiving, Bear ran the Turkey trot. He ran a best time in his Prefontaine tank and shorts and mustache.
While Bear was gone, baby and I went to the PACKED Walmart to get the ingredients we needed to make stuffing and candied yams to take for dinner. Bear got home a little bit after us and we made the stuffing and candied yams and quickly ran out the door to meet everyone at Grandma Crismon's house for Thanksgiving dinner. We had a great time. Lots of mashed potatoes, rolls, stuffing, candied yams, turkey, salad, olives, green bean casserole, and of course PIE, pumpkin, blueberry and apple. YUM! Even though I shouldn't have, I had a little bit of stuffing and mashed potatoes and pie.....and let's just say baby has been a little cranky since :/ oops... We stayed over there pretty much all night.

Friday we didn't really see his family at all. They came over that night just to see Berlyn. They had a busy day out and about. We all gathered in our front room listening to Bear, Lexa, and Brody play some music. Then it turned into just Bear ha he sure is like his dad...he loves to be the center of attention around his family...and they think he is soooo funny it's hilarious. Bear was trying to make up a song about Rodolfo, but it wasn't working out so great....but since then he has mastered a song they need to hear :)

Saturday, Bear and Grandpa Fred went on a long bike ride, 50 miles while the girls went to the Chandler mall to see Aunt Erica while she was working. We had a fun time. This was a great weekend. Glad the Behrmann's came down. We love spending time with them.

Here are a few photos....baby was sleeping, it was late. Uncles Brett and Brody are missing from these pictures, but there is Rodolfo, Lexa, Brittany, Berlyn, Michelle, Shelby and Fred.
She was such a good baby (now that mommy is not eating dairy and wheat, yes it has helped A TON!). We dressed her up in her cute ASU onsie that my friend Kayleen gave her when I graduated. Daddy was sporting his new "fear the fork" shirt. It was pretty nice outside and not too hot, so we were able to stay the whole time. Berlyn cannot wait 'til she is able to swim! She is gonna be sooooo fast with us as her parents.

So as you know (from the "gripe water" post) that baby has been a bit fussy lately. Even though the gripe water helped some she still is being a little stinker sometimes. So, as advised by my hubby, I went to talk to my aunt who pretty much knows anything and everything. We tried some "muscle testing" on baby and I to determine where the crying was coming from. (If you want to know what this is just ask). I knew something was upsetting her little tummy, but I didn't know what. (She has also had GREEN poo for the last couple weeks. Yes GREEN, not the normal mustard color it should be. The doctor said this is okay if she is still gaining weight, but I haven't believed her....). Anyways...we came to the conclusion of a food allergy. We decided I would cut out ALL dairy and wheat products for 2 weeks to see if this would help. So pretty much I can't eat ANYTHING. All I can eat are fruits, veggies, eggs, and meat (Yes all the healthy stuff I should be eating anyways, but where's the fun in that??? AND Thanksgiving is coming up. DANG IT!). The good thing about it is that me and baby will be healthier and I will prolly lose these last 6 pounds I've been hangin onto quicker....and maybe some more :) (That would be nice!). I am also taking some probiotics and doing a 20 minute trampoline workout everyday. She also lent me her power juicer so I can whip up some carrot/apple/spinach juice everyday. How nice is she? Well in two weeks I will let you know if this worked! Hopefully I can be as strict as I need to be on the diet. :/
I have had a cranky baby lately! At first I had no clue why, then I started looking up stuff to try and find out what was wrong because it made me so sad to see her cry all the time. Whenever I would try to feed her she would protest and did not want to eat and it worried me because she was eating less. After much research I thought she developed thrush (a yeast infection in her mouth and on her bottom) and that maybe I had it on my chest too. I thought maybe it hurt her to eat, so that was the reason for her crying. I called the doctor's office and made an appointment because if she and I did have it I didn't want it to get worse. Berlyn's doctor is not at the office on Monday's so we had to see another doctor. She looked in Berlyn's mouth and in her doctor and confirmed she had thrush! OMG! I read that it was so hard to get rid of! She prescribed us some Nysatin drops and cream. When we got home I researched that and read that the Nysatin drops only work about 50% of the time to get rid of thrush in the mouth! Great! I didn't want those odds, I wanted something that worked! I went out and bought some Grapefruit seed extract that I would take to get it out of my system and I started taking some probiotics.
Berlyn's rash cleared up quick with the cream, but I still didn't know how her mouth was looking (she is very stubborn and would not open up wide enough to let me see). Well two days later we went back to the doctor for her two month check up and shots. We saw her regular doctor this time. I told her what was going on and what we were doing for it. She looked in Berlyn's mouth and said she did not have thrush! What?!?!?! So turns out she never even had it and the other doctor gave her stupid antibiotics for nothing! Gosh dang. Her doctor suggested maybe she just got collicy or she has gas/tummy troubles. She suggested to get Mylicon drops or Gripe Water.

So we stopped the antibiotics quick if we didn't need it in the first place. We also went home and researched both Mylicon drops and gripe water. We went with gripe water. It is made of all natural ingredients and it is not "medicine." It is supposed to help relieve gas bubbles and it has a calming effect on babies and let me tell you, she has been a much happier baby. Turns out all she has is gas and we've all experienced that. It can give you sharp pains sometimes. She is eating much better and definitely not crying as much. THANK YOU GRIPE WATER!

So when we were at my parents for Halloween and she was being so cranky, it was just gas. But seriously she was crying for a couple hours straight. I had pumped some milk to give her in a bottle but every time we would try to feed her she would scream. The one person who finally got her calmed down enough to eat her bottle was her Aunt Sabrina. Thank you Aunt Sabrina for helping us that night! We love you! :)

We dressed her up as an ASU cheerleader (she also will use this outfit to go cheer on her daddy when he competes in triathlons for the ASU Triathlon team). Bear was Batman and I was Cat woman. Yeah I know Bear and I sorta match and baby has nothing to do with us, but the ASU cheerleading costume was too cute to pass up. I wanted to be an ASU fan and have bear be an ASU football player or swimmer (since he was on ASU's swim team last year he has a speedo with the logo on it), but that failed and we got the costumes you see.

Halloween night we went over to my mom and dad's house for dinner with my brother and sister-in-law Sabrina. We had some YUMMY corn chowder soup. We wanted to take baby around to a few houses, at least to the people we knew, just to say we did, but that didn't end up happening. She was a cranky baby that night and you will see why in my next post. But for now, here are some pictures...I will put up some better ones when I get them :)
Every time I got the camera ready she got stage fright....so we will keep trying to get it on camera to put up here :) I am so proud of her. Not only has she been rolling over, she now gives us big gummy smiles and talks to us with her little coo sounds. She can do push-ups with her arms while on her tummy. She is getting so big already! I can't believe it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9153285296743269938.post-24082342102946887142011-10-26T10:38:00.000-07:002011-10-26T10:40:23.253-07:00Berlyn's Baby BlessingOn October 9th, 2011 Berlyn was given a priesthood blessing by her daddy at church. Bear's parents came down for the weekend to see Berlyn on her special day. In addition, a lot of our extended family and friends came to support us....My parents, Wayne and Martha Crismon, Tom and Marci Crismon, Paul and Cheryl Reynolds, John and Erica Crismon, Scott and Lindsey Crismon, Denny and Sandy Hassell, Chad and Janna Hassell, Seth Hassell, Talor and Sabrina Hassell, Michelle Moore, Cameron and Ashley, and of course everyone's kids :) (I hope I'm not forgetting anyone :(...) We had invited Wayne (Bear's grandpa), Denny (my grandpa), my dad, bear's dad, and my brother Talor to be in the circle and participate in the blessing. Bear did such a wonderful job and gave the sweetest blessing. He blessed Berlyn to be strong and healthy physically, but also spiritually. He blessed her to be able to withstand temptation from Satan. He blessed her to know how much her mother (me) loves her and that I will do anything for her (this is where I started balling....and Bear too- He loves me :). He also blessed her to be able to find a husband that will take her to the temple to be sealed for time and all eternity. Of course there was a lot more too it, but I cannot write all of it. Man he did such a great job and I love him so much.

Back on September 26th...(yes I'm waay behind) baby Berlyn got her first real bath. Her umbilical stub finally fell off and her belly button had dried out so we could put her in water. Whoo hoo! What a glorious day not to have to worry about bumping her stub or accidentally ripping it off! She LOVED her bath (and still loves them). She got so relaxed and loved to hear mommy talk to her while she was just soakin in the tub. :) She was very wiggly though...she liked to already splash around even though she probably did not realize what she was doing. She is gonna be a great swimmer one day, takin after her momma and daddy :)

Well after being 38 weeks pregnant, 75% effaced and 3cm dialated, I wanted to GET OUR BABY OUT ALREADY! I was trying everything. My mom and I would walk around the mall for hours in hopes that it would put me into labor.....nothing. We tried black licorice (spelling?), rasberry leaf tea, more walking, foot reflexology and NOTHING was working. Our baby was being stubborn and just did not want to come into this scary world yet, so about a week and a half before she was due I went over to my sister-in-law's mom's house and had someone do some more foot reflexology and aroma therapy to hopefully jump start labor. And YES it worked. I was having mild contractions all day long, but they were not hurting yet. Finally, after having these contractions for about 7 hours I went to the hospital. They told me I was in early labor, but not in ACTIVE labor. I did have high blood pressure so they called the on call doctor (which was not my doctor) and he decided to just induce me. So they hooked up the IV, which hurt like crazy!! (never get it in the hand!) and they hooked up the pitocin and I thought I was on my way to FINALLY getting our baby out. Boy was I wrong. Well because we were there all night long I was so tired I fell asleep....which caused my body to shut down and the labor to stop. The nurse came in and told me that they were going to send me home because I was not progressing (still at 3cm dialated) and because I was not 39 weeks yet, they could not upt he pitocin. WHAT?!?! I would have been 39 weeks the next day and they still could not up it?!? I got the IV for nothing.....and now I was twice as puffy because of all that fluid in me.
Well Dr. Beck felt bad because they were sending me home so he told me he would schedule an induction when I was 39 weeks (which was actually only the next day!). I was scheduled to come back in the next day(Monday August 29th) at 7:30am. They told me to call first to make sure they had a room for me. Well that night a nurse called me and told me they would just call me when a room opened up because they were so busy. I had to WAIT and WAIT and WAIT for them to call me. I was getting so anxious. I really just wanted to hold our baby in my arms.Well Monday came and left and no call yet. Tuesday morning Bear left for school at about 6:30 am because we still had not heard from the hospital. At 7:30 that morning I was woken up by a call from the hospital saying to come in! Whoo hoo! I called Bear and told him to turn around and meet me at the hospital because we were going to have this baby! I called my mom and she met us there as well.
When I arrived at the hospital, I checked in an Dr. Beck came by and said once they got me hooked up he would come in and break my water so they could not send me home this time. :) I was a happy girl. I got checked in and they took us to our labor and delivery room. I was getting nervous now. It was finally happening and I didn't know what to expect. I hadn't taken any child birth classes and was just goin to wing it. They gave me my IV in the wrist this time and it did not hurt one bit...thank goodness! My nurse, Mary, hooked up the pitocin around 9am and I was still at 3cm dialated, so we just had to wait....Around 11am or so Dr. Beck came in and broke my water. I still could not feel any of my contractions, so I waited to get my epidural. I wanted to at least feel some to know what they felt like. After only like 2 contractions I got my epidural ha. This was like 12 or 12:30pm. That did not hurt at all! and I couldn't feel a thing again. My nurse checked me and I was still dialated to 3cm. Around 2pm she checked me again and I was at 5cm. Whoo hoo progress! She brought in the peanut pillow and put it between my legs. She said it was supposed to cut hours off of labor and boy was she right. Only an hour later at 3:15pm she checked me and I was at 9.5cm and it as time to push. My first push she saw baby's hair and said we should probably call the doctor in now. (They don't call the doctor in right away because some girls don't push as good and it takes forever and doctors don't like to come in too early). Dr.Beck came in and was only there about ten to fifteen minutes. Only seven pushes and baby was out and I didn't have to have an episiotomy! I did tear a tiny bit and had two stitches, but not bad at all. She was born at 3:31pm on Tuesday August 30th 2011. Only 6.5 hours of labor. Once she was out I said, "She made that way too easy I could do this again!" Ha.
Once she was out Dr. Beck cleaned her off a little and had Bear cut the umbilical cord. They wrapped her up and put her in my arms and thats when the tears started to flow...Oh my gosh it was an overwhelming feeling of happiness. How did this baby grow inside me and just pop out?!?! What a miracle it really was. She was beautiful! The nurses asked us what her name was and I looked at Bear and we decided her name would be Berlyn Michelle Behrmnn. Michelle is after Bear's mom.
After I had my chance to hold her and bond with her they took her and weighed her. We all guessed she would be about 7.5 to 8 lbs. We were wrong...she was only 6.5 lbs. Teeny teeny and we did not expect all that hair! She was about 20 inches long and as cute as can be. When they were weighing her she was screaming and I said her name and she instantly stopped. She knew momma's voice and stopped to hear what I had to say. :) Man oh man was I in love.
Well the rest of the hospital stay was crazy. We were there two LONG nights with nurses coming in every few hours. I just wanted to go home and get our lives started together. When we finally brought baby home that is when it actually hit me. I'm a MOM and this little baby depends on me to feed her and change her and help her grow. Amazing feeling to know that someone needs you that much, that if you just let her be she would die. I love knowing that she NEEDS me. Everyone wants to be needed at some point. Being a mom is the best ever along with being a wife. I love my little family and would not trade this for anything!
